Update on Life

I have been absolutely terrible about blogging for the last couple months... I can tell you right when it happened, but I don't really know why... When we found out my grandma was sick in April I just lost my ambition to blog. It seems really silly, but it might be because she was the one who read the blog the most. She would always comment on our adventures and call me to tell me she loved the pictures I posted. Without her reading it just didn't seem as important. Sadly, as much as I don't want to admit it; life goes on... and on and on and here I am 3 months later, 24 posts behind and struggling to keep this blog/journal current. So here goes on an update about life in general and I will continue to work backwards to complete the posts from Paragliding, Easter, Father's Day, etc.

Sometime along the way it just got too sad for me to drive the S10 we bought from Grandpa anymore… the dash mat that said “Langs” and the faint smell of cigarette smoke (even after the 2 odor bombs we used). We parked it in the garage and after Grandma passed we sold it. I know it is just a ‘thing’ but it was sad to sell it (but too sad to keep it too). Luckily there were some other reasons I wanted to sell it too… like its age (1997) and the fact that we have a super nice newer truck just sitting in the garage costing us money. Between repairs and maintenance on the S10 the money we saved in gas just didn’t make having 3 vehicles worthwhile. Kenny wanted to keep the truck, but agreed we had other goals in mind and it was so nice to pay off some debt with the money from selling the truck.

Shortly after we sold the S10 we needed to buy tires for the Dodge… I seriously hate upkeep and maintenance, $1200 in tires mean a trip we can’t take or some debt we can’t pay down…I do have to admit the new tires are awesome… just wish they didn't cost so much.
That very same week we (when I say we I mean Kenny because he took care of it all) finally got the dogs in to the vet for their check-ups and rabies shots… We have seriously neglected getting that done and had to also pay a bunch of late fees to get the dogs back in good standing with the state ($140 total the licensing and $280 for the vet bill). They did a great job cleaning Toby’s teeth and still encourage us to get him in to have the baby teeth that never fell out pulled… I am reluctant to have a dog put under when it isn’t life or death. They noticed Hope’s eyes are getting cloudy, but said she was fine and joked that she just can’t drive at night.
We did splurge on this ridiculously awesome collar for Shelby…

We have been trying to save more, spend less, eat in- all that good stuff and doing pretty great at it too (well up until our little vacation up North for the 4th but vacations cost money…).  I have been on Freecycle A LOT and got a huge bag of envelopes (great for card making) and a pedestal for the washer! I really like freecycle, but I can see how it is better for young families, because a lot of what is offered is children’s clothing, toys etc
We have also kept busy, mindlessly watching seasons 1-3 of True Blood… it is not the best quality show, but I really like it because it is like Twilight! Becky gave Kenny season 3 as a thank you for driving us to and from Durango. Season 4 started on 06/26 and we shamefully added HBO to our cable so we could tune in…We did get rid of the HD programming in our bedroom, since we never watch TV in there, and that balanced out the bill so we aren’t paying too much more for one show…
I have started a great exercised program called Ladies Fitness Boot Camp. My mom’s friend, Stargret has been doing these boot camp classes for 3 years and lost a ton of weight! I have wanted to try them out, but the program is so expensive I never signed up. Living Social advertised a deal for 30 days for $30 AND one of the locations is 6 mins from my house! I purchased 2 months worth. The class meets three days per week on Monday,Wednesday and Friday. The first two days were extremely hard and I almost threw- up both days… it has been so long since I have been in really good shape! Besides being extremely muscle sore I felt great! Even though the class is 5-6 AM and I get up about 4:20, I don’t feel sleepy during the day at all. I have not had a change in weight at all, but I do feel like my clothes fit better. I am excited to continue with the classes!
Kenny has been busy with work and travels a lot: mostly day trips to Yuma, Tucson or someplace up north. He is racking up the miles on his car and will probably order a new one by the end of this year.
One of my items on my bucket list is to read 100 New York Times Best Seller books. I set this goal mostly to see what the popular culture is reading and to just start reading for pleasure again. I am really good at missing the popular craze like Twilight or Harry Potter- I have never even watch a Star Wars movie! Anyway, I read a book called The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. The basic idea is Gretchen set all kinds of goals and resolutions to see if they made a difference in her ‘happiness’. At first I enjoyed the book and felt inspired to do the same things… then I realized what she was looking for; her purpose. A lot of the happiness people are looking for in life comes right down to the fact that they are looking for God.  I finished the book only because I wanted to add it to my list of 100 books, otherwise I would have quit about ½ way (and wouldn’t have missed much). The other book I read recently is called Go Ask Alice. Its about a 15 year old girl who gets addicted to drugs… Blair recommended it to me because she thought it might give me some insight as to how my brother and Crystal think. It was a good, quick read,  but hit a little too close to home for me. Oh I also read The Help recommended by Lora Jones. That was a fabulous book which has been made into a movie and comes out in August! I just love to read a book and then watch the movie so I can compare the two. I am a dork I know.
I am also working on CPCU again… I still have that one last part lingering over my head. My boss Doug asked, Jereme to help tutor me on this class. It’s kind of embarrassing to get help like that… I have never needed a tutor and I used to BE a tutor in HS…but I guess there is no shame in accepting help… although it feels shameful! We study Tues- Thur at lunch and I am actually learning a lot… Maybe 5th time IS the charm!
My dad is back at work and has been since his hospital release. He works long, hard hours using his body… He is tired a lot, but keeps going. Last night he said he is so lazy now… I couldn’t believe he thought that about himself! I told him he is NOT lazy he just doesn’t have energy to do all the things he used to.
My mom is doing okay. She is still in search of a job, but with the economy it is difficult. I know she misses Grandma every day. It’s hard to see her sad, but I don’t know what I can do for her.
My brother and the boys have been staying with my parents and Brian is working on getting into the National Guard. Sadly one of the steps he has to take is to take care of his back child support for his daughter Genna (being unemployed for 2 years doesn’t help the situation). He has decided to sign over his parental rights for her. It is heartbreaking, but probably a necessary step. They no longer have a relationship and someday I know they will reunite and build the bond they once had. Once the paper work goes through he should be able to get into the Guard. I am praying for a powerful change and fresh start for his life (and the boys).
Well, I think that is about it… except for the multitude of individual posts I will be working on.

4th of July

Since we came back a day early from camping we had all day Monday the 4th to do something. The only thing we could think of was going to see Transformers 3 (which the adults were looking forward to just as much as they boys!) We relaxed all morning and then went to pick up the boys for the movie.

I had purchased Transformer shirts for the boys and when I gave them to the boys Jacob said something like - Ohhhh I love it! Thanks and Little Brian said, "Oh where are the toys" Grrr I said "Oh you don't like it? I will give it to someone who does appreciate it then!" and handed the shirt to my cousin Kenny. He played off really well, "Oh thank you so much I will put it right on!" And he did (with help) lol-

He did end up giving the shirt to Little B... hope he learned his lesson!

The boys LOVED the movie of course. Little Brian sat next to my mom and kept asking her, why is that happening? And making other comments about the movie, it was really adorable how he cuddled up next to her and they were in there little movie zone. Jacob fell asleep in the middle of the movie and big Brian nudged him and said, "Do you like this movie?" Jacob woke up wide eyed and said, "Yes, I love it" ha ha

After the movie we grabbed some Mexican food at Arribas (since Rio Mirage was closed). My dad even went to dinner with us. I can't express how much I love the whole family being together. I wish I would have taken a picture of everyone.
After dinner it was time to head out to see Fireworks. We of course stopped at QT for drinks. I try to make the boys pay for their own drinks so they start to understand paying for things... I ask them how much things cost and how much money they have... sometimes they get it and sometimes they don't, but I think every little but counts.

Blair and her family were up at the park already so we parked (very far away) and met up with them. The kids enjoyed playing together... and the adults too-

and then we all joined in-

The firework show was awesome and the boys watch in wonder... for about 10 mins.

Little B sat in his Uncle Kenny's lap through the entire show :)

When we got home we played with sparklers (even thought they are prohibited by our city... I seriously don't get how they can be legal and sold in the stores, but you cant put them off anywhere!!)

Camping- 4th of July weekend

This camping trip had been planned for almost a month... but even the most perfect plans cannot predict natural disaster. As a result of the resent forest fires, the area we normally camp, Forest Lakes, had been shutdown for the holiday weekend! This caused Kenny and I some heartburn because we had already taken the trailer up to Forest Lakes. Plus we now only have one truck and cannot haul the quads and the travel trailer in the same trip... what to do?
Fortunately, everything worked out just fine! My mom borrowed my dad's truck and hauled a quad up and Kenny and I pulled a quad up on a trailer and loaded the bed up with trailer stuff. Then when we picked up the travel trailer in Forest Lakes we moved the quad into the bed and put all the supplies into the travel trailer. It took Kenny and I 6 hours of driving, but it was worth it to make the trip happen. We were lucky enough to have some old friends save us a spot up in Flagstaff. The Thompson's are a family friends from my old LDS church. Their daughter, Candice and I were practically inseparable in 6th- 8th grade and as a result our parents became friends and their youngest son Jonathan was even the ring bearer in Mine and Kenny's wedding! Anyway, we camped with their group which was an absolute blast!

We did some riding right away on Friday and found it was VERY try and DUSTY! You couldn't go on a ride without coming back covered in dust- exhibit A:

We had a nice little camp spot -
Little Kenny chose to stay in a tent not the trailer...
Our neighbor at the camp ground built a zipline through the camp ground!! They were super nice and after Jeff's lead I tried out the line. It was really fun, but a little nerve racking just because it was a homemade line and made mostly for kids...

For meals we all decided to take turns cooking. The men (Kenny, Brian and Little Kenny) each made a dinner and mom and I took care of breakfast (although we left a day early so she lucked out of cooking).
When I went to use the stove we realized we had another bird nest in the vent!

That afternoon Little Kenny, Kenny and I took a ride with Jeff and Jonathan and a few others to do a little repelling. I haven't repelled (except at an indoor rock climbing gym or at the ziplining place in CO) for almost 14 years. When I was 14ish I went on a day trip with the church and had a pretty bad accident. After repelling down the cliff I was climbing back up to the top and neglected to hold onto the rope... I ended up tumbling about 30 feet head over feet down the rocks headed toward a cliff. Luckily Jack Mecham was standing at the base of that area right before the cliff and stopped me from going over. I really don't know how far down the cliff was that I would have fallen off of, but it was enough that I would have been seriously hurt...

Anyway, it was very cool to get to do it again today. The rock we repelled off of was only about 30 feet high, so it was a good one to start out on.

While the Kennys relaxed - My mom and I spent some time over at Stargret's place and worked on crafts. Jonathan had precut wood stars and squares for us to decorate with paint, pattern paper and other embellishments It was really fun thing to do on a camping trip! ( I swear our trips will never be the same after the trip with them : ) )

I of course want to do everything so we were off within an hour to our next adventure : The Cave!

Don't you love our outfits? This was our attempt to keep the dust out of our faces!

Saturday night's sunset
We were out playing with the dogs in the field and the guys started playing football with the dogs. It was pretty comical !

Saturday night Stargret hosted a desert bar! It was really fun! Everyone brought a dessert and we all pigged out on sweets. Then it was time for a few games of LCR. If you aren't familiar basically you have 3 dice and they either have an L, R , C or a dot on each side. You start with 3 items (quarters, dollars, cookies whatever) and if you roll an L you move one item to your left, if you roll and R you move it to your right, a C moves to move to the center and a dot means you keep it. You do this until one person has one item and that person wins the entire pot. It is super fun how excited people get about it... I even won one round! Woot woot!

Sunday was a riding day-

I am pretty much a beginner when it comes to my quading skills and I am constantly getting hurt... Saturday for example I went full throttle UP a jump and threw myself over the handle bars... It knocked the wind out of me and really shook me up. Little Kenny was super patient with me and helped me to do a great (safe) jump! We had a great time out riding together! I just can't wait till he moves here!

We decided to beat some of the traffic and head home on Sunday afternoon. But is was such a great trip and I was so happy to have my mom there with all of us. I hope we can do it again soon!
